Rafting on the Zanskar is a river adventure like none other in the world. The Zanskar river expedition is a classic and is one of the best rivers for kayaking or rafting in India. It has it all, great white-water, amazing scenery and a cultural experience second to none. It takes you through one of the most breathtaking gorges in Asia. The stark and massive rocky massifs, colorful bands of mineral deposits which run through entire mountainsides, small, quaint campsites and villages nestled within the confines of the Zanskar gorge make it a visual delight. Also know as the Grand Canyon of Asia, it is located in the lunar-like landscape of western Ladakh. Ladakh is unique in India. With over 90% of the population practising Buddhism it is more like Tibet than India in many ways. This expedition gives a great insight into local culture with visits to monasteries, palaces, villages and markets all included. Get ready for sights and sounds of monasteries, drums, fluttering prayer flags, canyons and some of the best white water, that are far beyond your dreams and expectations.
The trip extends over 10 days, though the actual rafting part on the Zanskar is for 4 days. The trip begins with a flight over the Himalayas into the Trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. We spend 2 days in Leh town acclimatizing at 11,000 feet above sea level and visiting the ancient monasteries, palaces and villages around Leh. We drive the next 2 days west of Leh past the town of Kargil and travel south into the valley of Zanskar, one of the coldest inhabited places on earth, to get to the actual point from where our river journey begins. The drive is full of unforgettable experiences, stunning views and deep forays into the heart of Zanskar valley and the lives of its people.
Starting the trip on the Stod/Doda river a tributary of Zanskar, we begin our self contained multi-day river adventure down the spectacular and scenic Zanskar river gorge. This 4 day river journey takes us down the extremely desolate, remote and sheer Zanskar gorge with walls rising a few thousand feet out of the river bed. The spectacular Zanskar Canyon, also famously referred to as the Grand Canyon of Asia gives you a feeling of being at one with nature or the only person in this desolate part of the world. The Zanskar canyon is a grade 4 section and offers amazing whitewater for rafting and kayaking. This amazing river journey culminates on the mighty Indus river, (which incidentally lends India its name) after the confluence of Zanskar and Indus at Nimo. Undoubtedly a classic, this journey to the last truly lost horizon of our shrinking planet -Zanskar, the "land of white copper” is a trip of a lifetime.
